Part 1In a place we cannot see, there lived the magic friends three: Sandy, Bobby and Dewey.
Sandy, a mermaid with a twin fin tail, is afraid of water and cries and wails.
Bobby is a ninja; they are usually quiet and quick. But with most every step Bobby trips.
Dewey is a pixie with wings of light. Too bad for Dewey that he is afraid of heights.
Together they thought they knew what they would do. They would go to the Naming Grounds and become someone new.
“I’ll swim!” sang Sandy.
“I’ll be quiet!” boasted Bobby.
“I’ll do loop-de-loops!” decided Dewey.
So off they went, through the trees, each determined to be who they meant to be.
Surrounded by trees, they saw a shack. And in that shack they heard things rattle and clack…
“Welcome! Welcome!” shouted a man. “Come buy a name, if that is your plan!”
Dewey and Sandy and Bobby all bought a name from the stall. The names glistened and shone. They rattled and clacked. Dewey’s was so heavy that he fell on his back.
Bobby, the ninja, was louder than ever. Sandy wondered if she would swim now and thought, ‘No, never’.
“Is this all?” the children asked. “Is this all?” they cried. “Try the Old Naming Grounds” yelled the shop-keep, “If you’re not satisfied!”
So off they went, through the trees, each determined to be who they meant to be.
They came to a lake, which they had to cross. There was a boat but no oars, was all hope lost?
Sandy shivered and shook. She cried and she quaked. Sandy decided to pull her friends across the lake.
With eyes squeezed shut Sandy towed them all the way. Dewey and Bobby cheered for her, “Hurray!”
On the island, the Old Naming Grounds, the three friends stopped. They looked around.
A sign by a cave told them which way to go. Holding hands the friends cried, “GER-ON-I-MO!”
A sign by a dragon told them to get the key and be on their way. ‘But don’t wake the dragon, or else you will pay!’
Bobby gulped, nodded and looked all around. He watched his feet and did not make a sound.
The friends all breathed a sigh of relief. They were glad to be away from the dragon and his very sharp teeth.
High on a wall there was a door, but no ladder. Dewey gulped and tried to control his bladder.
“I’ll do it” he said. “I have to, I must! I won’t look down! I’ll get us new names or bust!”
Dewey gulped and he shook and he flew way up high. He never looked down and was glad he did not die.
Opening the door he pushed a ladder down. His friends climbed to join him at the heart of the Old Naming Grounds.
In a room sat a man and the three friends told him their plan. “New names?” he asked. “Whatever for? If you needed new ones how did you get through my door?”
“I’m afraid to fly” said Dewey. “I’m scared to swim” Sandy said. “As a ninja, momma says I’m louder than a monkey in a trash bin” sighed Bobby.
“But you flew and you swam and you were quieter than a baby lamb! If you had not fought your fears you surely would not have made it here!”
Sandy and Bobby and Dewey all smiled as they realized their work had been worthwhile.
Down the ladder, around the dragon and across the lake, the three friends realized their names were just great.
So off they went through the trees, each knowing they were who they were meant to be.

Part 2 We all have things that we’re afraid of, or things that we don’t think we’re that great at. But Sandy, Bobby and Dewey showed us that if you just put your mind to something and try your best, then you can succeed, especially if your friends are counting on you!
